From MemorialDayPensacola.com: “Although most of the year, the conservative Florida panhandle city of Pensacola isn’t a place you would think of as one of the friendliest parts of the world for gay and lesbian visitors, in late May, over Memorial Day weekend, it’s one of the world’s true gay meccas. The five-day weekend (it takes place Thursday, May 27, through Monday, May 31, 2010) began more than 20 years ago and has become a cross between a circuit-style gay gathering and a regional Florida panhandle gay pride celebration, drawing some 50,000 revelers to the area over the course of several days.

There are a couple of different events taking place over this weekend. A new GLBT event for 2010, and one that looks very promising, is Armorpio Entertainment’s Monster Beach Party, which takes place Friday and Saturday nights at swanky Hemingway’s Island Grill (400 Quietwater Beach Rd., Pensacola Beach, 850-934-4747) and a private beach house includes live entertainment and DJs and an open bar (see the Monster Beach event page on Facebook for details about the entertainment). Tickets start at just $15 to attend one evening and partake of the outdoor open bar to $75 for an all-weekend access pass that includes the open bar plus indoor access to the beach house, showers, a Jacuzzi, and a VIP area. The promoters are also offering a $250 per person ($475 per couple) “Exclusive Sleepover Package”, which includes three nights’ accommodations in a private room. Tickets must be purchased in advance, as attendance is limited (and there’s no parking on-site).

Additionally, as it has for many years, the city’s popular gay nightclub, Emerald City (406 E. Wright St., 850-433-9491), will be hosting a series of Pensacola Memorial Weekend parties, beginning on Thursday night and lasting until Monday evening. The top event is Saturday’s Sweat party, featuring famed DJ Joe Gauthreaux. There are also after-parties, called Spellbound 1 and 2 at MySpayce (212 E. Garden St.) – these are also sponsored by Emerald City. These take place Saturday and Sunday at 2 am until morning (in other words, after the bars have closed on Friday and Saturday nights).

Of course, additionally, numerous gay bars as well as gay-popular restaurants, hotels, and shops fill up with gay folks during the week. The organizers of the Emerald City parties have GLBT-friendly hotel information on Pensacola. Also check online to compare hotel rates in Pensacola and find the best deals during Memorial Day weekend. Other resources of note include New Orleans-based Ambush Magazine.

For basic travel and tourism information on the region, you can also look to the Pensacola Bay Area Convention & Visitors Bureau. But think of this organization as a general guide to the area, not as a supporter of the event – the organization makes no mention of the Memorial Day Weekend party on its site, nor does it provide any information for gay and lesbian visitors.”
